The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has announced updates to the immigration categories in the 2025 Express Entry system, featuring significant changes to the category review process.

A new category—Education—has been added, covering five professional fields. Meanwhile, the Transport category has been removed from the category review system. Additionally, IRCC has included several professions from the social services sector into the Healthcare category.

The current immigration categories for Express Entry are:

  • French Proficiency
  • Healthcare and Social Services
  • Agriculture and Food Technology
  • Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)
  • Construction and Engineering Professions
  • Education

However, IRCC emphasizes that the top priority categories for 2025 will be:

  • French Proficiency
  • Healthcare and Social Services
  • Construction and Engineering Professions
  • Education

In addition to category changes, IRCC has also adjusted the list of eligible professions. Some new professions have been added, while others have been removed.

Changes to specific categories include:

  • Healthcare and Social Services: 8 new professions added, 6 professions removed.
  • STEM: 6 new professions added, 19 professions removed.
  • Construction and Engineering Professions: 19 new professions added, 4 professions removed.
  • Agriculture and Food Technology: 2 professions removed.
  • Education: 5 new professions added.

These changes reflect Canada’s strategy to attract workers in critical sectors to meet economic and demographic needs.
