Vancouver Named North America’s Happiest City in Global Ranking

Vancouver has officially earned the title of North America’s happiest city, placing 11th globally in the 2025 Happy City Index, an annual assessment conducted by the London-based Institute for Quality of Life.

Out of 200 cities worldwide, Vancouver not only claimed a top-tier ranking but was also awarded gold status, joining 30 other cities recognized for exceptional livability, wellbeing, and happiness.

A City That Excels in Education, Health, and Environment

Vancouver scored an impressive 919 points, with the highest marks awarded in categories such as citizens (242 points), environment (222), and governance (168). The city also stood out in health (122), mobility (101), and economy (65).

The Institute praised Vancouver’s focus on education and innovation, highlighting its globally-ranked universities and strong research culture. According to the report:

  • 23.1% of Vancouver residents hold a master’s degree.
  • 69.5% are fluent in at least one foreign language.
  • 82% possess digital skills—key indicators linked to personal happiness.

In the realm of health and wellness, the city’s life expectancy is 84.4 years, one of the highest in the world. All residents have access to medical insurance, and the city promotes active lifestyles through its extensive park system, despite a 30% obesity rate. Moreover, 18% of adults receive coordinated mental health care—a new metric included in this year’s evaluation.

Who Took the Top Spots?

Copenhagen, Denmark, was named the happiest city in the world, followed by Zurich, Singapore, Aarhus, and Antwerp. Vancouver narrowly missed the top 10, just behind Rotterdam.

How Did Other Canadian Cities Fare?

While Vancouver took the national lead, Halifax, Nova Scotia, ranked second in Canada at 148th (bronze status), followed by Toronto (160th), Ottawa (178th), and Quebec City (193rd).

This global recognition affirms what locals already know: Vancouver offers a unique blend of natural beauty, urban sophistication, and a high quality of life that continues to attract people from around the world.
